GRADUATE AND UNDERGRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION / DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGY HOME
FacultyResidentsCurriculumActivitiesFor Applicants

Here at GRMERC/MSU, we offer a residency education program that is designed to produce well-trained, competent radiologists who are committed to continued excellence in the field of Radiology. Upon completion of the program our residents are able to function in the academic or private practice of radiology. The broad based exposure to both normal anatomy and a broad spectrum of pathologic findings assists the residents in their learning as they work closely with our dedicated staff of community radiologists.

We are committed to offer a personalized educational program that will allow you to excel in whichever area of radiology that you decide to pursue.

Three community teaching hospitals are involved in the GRMERC/MSU Diagnostic Radiology residency: Spectrum Health Butterworth, Spectrum Health Blodgett, and Saint Mary's Health Center. There are 47 board-certified radiologists collectively staffing Spectrum Health, and 13 board-certified radiologists staffing Saint Mary's Health Care.

At Spectrum Health Butterworth, board-certified subspecialized radiologists staff the Diagnostic Radiology Department, which performs an average of 348,000 studies per year. Procedures performed include MRI, Cardiac imaging, interventional radiology/angiography, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, CT scanning, and fluoroscopy. There is a pediatric hospital within Spectrum Health Butterworth, providing residents with ample exposure to pediatric radiology, with teaching from three fellowship trained radiologists. Spectrum Health Butterworth is a Level One Trauma Center and provides radiology residents with the majority of their Emergency radiology exposure.

Spectrum Health Blodgett's Diagnostic Radiology Department performs an average of 134,000 diagnostic exams per year, including CT and MRI scanning, nuclear medicine with computerized gamma camera, angiography, and ultrasound. Residents complete the majority of their fluoroscopy at Blodgett, where there is a substantial bariatric surgery population. The West Michigan Regional Burn Center is also located at Spectrum Health Blodgett.

Saint Mary Health Center's board-certified radiologists provide resident training in interventional radiology/angiography, CT and MRI scanning, nuclear medicine, mammography, ultrasound and general radiology. Average yearly diagnostic radiology procedures number over 180,000. Saint Mary's is the West Michigan Renal Transplant Center, and provides residents with exposure to a variety of renal failure-related radiological studies. In 1983, the hospital opened the region's first Diagnostic Breast Center, which is the site where residents do three mammography rotations. The Lacks Cancer Center at Saint Mary's is a comprehensive, dedicated cancer hospital.

In addition to the three community teaching hospitals, the MSU Department of Radiology in East Lansing provides academic support. and serves as a site for in-depth magnetic resonance imaging electives.
