The GRMERC Pre-Medical Career Exploration Program (formerly PCCEP) is designed to provide college students or second career individuals who are considering a career as physicians the opportunity to observe physicians in patient care settings.
The program will typically blend exposure to each of our major hospitals and primary care disciplines (Family Practice, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics) into a one week experience. The program also will introduce students to Grand Rapids as an interesting and exciting place to practice medicine and encourage them to consider training in the community.
Since PCCEP began in July 1989, more than three hundred (300) students from more than 20 colleges and universities have completed the program. In addition to providing observational preceptorships for interested individuals, another priority of the program is to serve as a resource for additional information about applying to med school, test requirements, descriptions of the types of med programs available and other medical careers.
PCCEP is offered to pre-medical undergraduates who have completed at least one year of their degree requirements. We have approximately 6 spots available per time period on a first come first serve basis. The 2008 academic year will offer the following one week time blocks for interested applicants:
March 3 – March 7, 2008
March 10 – March 14, 2008
March 17 – March 21, 2008
May 5 – May 9, 2008
May 12 – May 16, 2008
May 19 – May 23, 2008
May 27 – May 30, 2008
2008 Orientation dates:
Monday, Feb 11 at 2:00 p.m.
Thursday, Feb 21 at 11:00 a.m.
Thursday, Apr 17 at 2:00 p.m.
Tuesday, May 2 at 11:00 a.m.
Please complete or submit the following information for consideration for the 2008 PCCEP program by February 1, 2008:
- Checkllist
- application
- letter of recommendation from counselor or advisor
- transcript or copy of a transcript
- completed immunization documentation
- photograph
- $50 non-refundable application fee made out to GRMERC
Any incomplete application or application received after February 1 will not be considered for the 2008 academic year. All requested application materials must arrive in the same packet to be considered complete. Also, you must be available to attend the orientation dates as outlined above (no additional orientations will be scheduled)
