Research
The residency program currently has a strong clinical research program which has been in place for twenty years. The goal of this program has been to create an environment of inquiry and scholarship within the Department of Emergency Medicine. Teaching faculty and all residents are required to participate in the development of new research projects, learn to analyze biomedical research, and develop habits of inquiry as a continuing professional responsibility.

The research director is Dr. Jeffrey Jones, who completed a research fellowship in 1988. Under his supervision, a journal club is held monthly in faculty homes to critically evaluate the current EM literature and emphasize evidence-based medicine.

Resident research projects have been completed in virtually all aspects of emergency medicine, including toxicology, trauma, aeromedical transport, epidemiology, EMS, public health, domestic violence, infectious disease, police search and rescue, hyperbaric oxygen, computer simulation, and pediatric resuscitation. Faculty preceptors assist residents during each stage of research project development. Financial support and time are also provided to allow residents to present their research project at local, national and/or international conferences. During the past five years, residents have presented projects at Seattle, Las Vegas, Washington D.C., Boston, San Francisco, British Columbia, and the Nice Acropolis, France.

The residency program is affiliated with the recently completed Van Andel Institute for Research and Education. The Institute has support staff, facilities and equipment for computer based outcome studies, animal research, medical simulation laboratories, and virtual reality capabilities.

Our EM research program is an established leader in West Michigan in the area of community health. Examples of published community projects include:

  • Patterns of anogenital injury in female sexual assault victims
  • Risk factors for myocardial infarction in young adults
  • Patient educational handouts on the internet: Quality and accessibility in English and Spanish
  • Prevention of ear barotrauma during air travel
  • Thermoregulation in search and rescue divers during extreme temperatures
  • Concussion in young athletes
  • A training video to help paramedics identify elder abuse and neglect
  • The cost effectiveness of a public shelter for inebriates
  • Integration of Emergency Medical Services and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams
  • Comparison of sexual assaults by strangers versus known assailants in a community-based population
  • Training of residents for their role as flight physician
Our research program has initiated collaborative studies with other departments, area hospitals, universities, colleges, and community health agencies. During the past few years, we have completed projects with the Kent County EMS; area nursing homes and adult foster care facilities; University of Alberta; Tufts Medical Center; the YWCA Sexual Assault Program; the Cook Health Sciences Institute; Grand Valley State University; Calvin College Department of Sociology; Akron General Medical Center in Ohio; University of Michigan Dept. of Emergency Medicine; MSU Dept of Epidemiology; and the Kent County International Airport. We have also completed studies in collaboration with other residency training programs in Grand Rapids including radiology, surgery/trauma, internal medicine, laboratory medicine, forensic pathology and pediatrics.
