Orthopaedic Surgery - Research
In the last few years we have increased our scholarly activity and productivity. Several of our faculty members have outstanding research backgrounds and many have been able to partner with the Van Andel Institute to provide additional research opportunities for residents. Faculty members are expected to use research projects as an educational tool with regards to methodology, statistics and an evidence-based investigative approach.
We encourage ALL orthopaedic residents to participate in research activities, regardless of their program year. To further encourage participation in specialty and subspecialty societies, the department as well as GRMEP, will reimburse travel expenses for research projects that are accepted for presentation (poster or podium) at various regional and national meetings.

Research Rotation (PGY4) – This is a mandatory,10 week rotation that allows PGY4’s time to complete and submit research projects for presentations and publication. Residents are expected to complete at least one research project of publishable quality before they graduate from residency.
Research /6-year Resident Track – For applicants/residents interested in further pursuing orthopaedic research, we now offer a separate ERAS match for 1 research resident per year. This resident will have 5 years of clinical experience combined with 1 year of Basic Science and/or clinical research (to be conducted between PGY2 and PGY3 years).
