Jenny Alexander

Hi, my name is Jenny Alexander. I am from Montgomery, Alabama – yes, way down south! I went to Auburn University for undergrad (War Eagle!) and then off to the Cayman Islands for Medical School. It is very beautiful there, and oh so warm! I love to have fun, watch movies, try to cook - or go out to eat, read books, run and I absolutely love shopping! I am very excited about this program and look forward to all the experiences.

Kate Boss

I hail from the Gerber Baby Food Capitol of the World – Fremont, Michigan. I came down to Holland, to attend Hope College for my undergrad studies, and then went on to Michigan State University for medical school.

When I am not in the hospital, I enjoy spending time with my family - including my favorite niece and nephew, exploring new towns and restaurants, shopping, reading, enjoying the outdoors with my boyfriend and dog (a boxer named Tyson), and anything near Lake Michigan. I also enjoy running, and plan to run my first marathon in Chicago in October … with Jelanie! I have been an avid Spartan fan my entire life, so LOVE getting green for football, basketball and hockey.

Jelanie Bush

I am one of the MSU students who has been in Grand Rapids for the past two years of clinicals. I’m excited to be staying because the faculty is very nice, and the teaching is phenomenal…not to mention the city is fun with lots of great restaurants, bars, nearby beaches, etc.

I am married, but have no kids, only a new puppy! I am originally from the east side of the state (Bay City/Saginaw area). I went to high school in Frankenmuth, and although I’m a little annoyed with the tourism after spending 4 years there, it’s a trip worth taking if you’ve never been. I’m a die-hard Spartan since I spent all 8 years at State, so U of M fans, beware. :o) My husband and I both love outdoorsy things….running, hiking, kayaking, etc. I’m also very into music and playing the piano when I have the time.

Robert Budinsky

I was born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio and went on to receive my undergraduate degree from Xavier University in Cincinnati, I then completed medical school at the University of Toledo College of Medicine, in Toledo, Ohio. Since I’ve spent my entire life in Ohio, I am anxious to begin another chapter in Western Michigan!

Away from the hospital, I’m easily distracted by anything that involves sports. I enjoy keeping active, and I am an avid fan of Xavier basketball and Denver Broncos football. I also cheer for the Ohio State Buckeyes (but I’ll do so much more quietly now that I live in Michigan!). I love most music as well, especially blues/jazz and classical. Even though I play both the piano and saxophone, I prefer to listen to the professionals. That’s why I currently have season tickets to the symphony!

Nicki Cain-Rinckey

I am originally from the Grand Rapids area, and went to undergrad at Grand Valley State University. I then went to medical school at Wayne State University SOM in Detroit. During undergrad, I worked at Spectrum Health and have always had an interest in coming back to this area.

Most of my spare time is spent with my husband, Matt, and my new baby boy, Max. We like spending time with family and friends, especially on one of the lakes here in Michigan.

Alice Foster

I am from a town called Waterloo, which is about one hour outside Toronto. Don’t worry, I will try to keep my “eh’s” to a minimum! I spent my undergrad years at Union College in Kentucky, where I played on the golf team. Afterwards I headed down to Grenada for medical School at St. George’s University. I did most of my clinicals in New York City, but also came to Michigan for a few as well.

I spend a considerable amount of my free time involved in sports. I swam competitively for many years and later became involved in competitive golf and running. I love to travel to new countries, and I have lived in England, Scotland, Grenada, St. Vincent, the United States and Canada. I most recently visited Ecuador, and I am currently learning to speak Spanish as a hobby. I also enjoy reading and cooking – and am constantly searching for the next great book to read and the next delicious meal to prepare!

Matt Hoffman

I was born and raised in Minnesota, so coming to the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital will be my first time living outside Minnesota. I attended St. John’s University for undergrad, and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis by way of Duluth, for Medical School.

When I am not working, I enjoy playing with my son, swimming, camping/hiking, canoeing/kayaking, and movies, wish I could still play water polo, pretty much anything outside and/or having to do with water

Elisabeth Martin

I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, but went to Lee University in Tennessee for my undergraduate studies. I then returned to Michigan and received my medical degree from Michigan State University – College of Osteopathic Medicine. After rotating in Grand Rapids I was impressed with the camaraderie of the residents, and friendliness as well as excellence of the attendings. I could tell they were getting a top notch education while also enjoying the experience of residency.

Currently my main outside interest is spending time with my husband and daughters who are 4 and 1. So if I’m not in the hospital you’ll most likely find me swinging in a park, playing dress-up or watching Curious George.

I also really enjoy exploring new places and have an interest in learning about other cultures, and most recently went on a medical mission to Guatemala while I was in medical school. I love the outdoors and like to mountain bike, rock climb, or just take a nice walk outside. When time permits, I enjoy painting and have dabbled in various crafty activities like knitting and jewelry making.

Sarah Milliken

I am a Colorado native, born and raised in Colorado Springs. I fell in love with the ocean at an early age, so being I come from a land-locked state, I spent my undergraduate career at the University of North Carolina –Wilmington, majoring in Marine Biology. Obviously I made the switch to medicine and that decision landed me back home at the University of Colorado Denver at the Anschutz Medical Campus School of Medicine (I’m glad I graduated before they added one more letter to our acronym!).

I am excited for a new adventure living in Michigan! I am not married, but my boyfriend is a fabulous guy who may be joining me in Grand Rapids. I do not have children or pets to brag about – but I do have several plants that have survived undergrad and medical school. Do they count???

When I am not busy working, I enjoy cooking/baking, knitting, photography, downhill skiing, scuba diving, volleyball, tennis, yoga, hiking, biking, rollerblading, and traveling; the bottom-line, if it is outdoors, I’m usually up for it.

Jamie Murphy

I grew up in a small town in Oregon and decided I needed some big city adventures so I went to USC in LA. At USC, water polo was pretty much my life and the four years flew by. Then I went to medical school at the American University of the Caribbean in St. Maarten and did all the things a Caribbean student should (shark dives, studying on the beach, and island hopping!). I’ve spent the last two years in California doing clinicals, and am a little sad and nervous to be leaving. However, I have friends nearby who guarantee I will fall in love with Michigan! Also, I am single, and have no kids except my weiner dog named Tootsie.

Susan O’Rourke

I was born in Cleveland, but have lived all over – Detroit, Milwaukee, Boston, San Francisco and Tulsa. I went to college at Boston College and Medical School at Oklahoma State University. I have a wonderful husband named Tim, who is a high school teacher, but has taken time off to be a stay at home dad while I do my internship – both my osteopathic internship and the upcoming year in Grand Rapids. I am currently a traditional intern at St. John West Shore Hospital in West Lake, Ohio, so I have a little practice being an intern, but that was mainly adults so am really looking forward to working more with children.

Tim and I have a 2 ½ year old son named Sean who is a bundle of energy. In my free time, I enjoy doing fun things with Sean and love outdoor activities – hiking, swimming, begin, etc.

Kristin Will

Having been raised on a small farm in northern Indiana, I am a country girl at heart. I love being outdoors, especially in the fall. During my first of undergrad, I met my wonderful husband, Adam (who is a Med/Peds intern), and somehow we managed to survive all four years together at the Indiana University School of Medicine. We are now up for the biggest adventure of our lives after the birth of our twins on April 2, 2008.

Before my beautiful twins, Noah and Abigail, were born, my interests included reading, being outdoors, gardening and spending time with family. Now my interests include spit-up, dirty diapers, and seeing the world through beautiful, curious new eyes. I cannot wait to share my love for reading and the outdoors with my little ones.

Jennifer Boutell, M.D.
Medical School: Michigan State University - CHM

I grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, just outside of Marquette. I attended Michigan State University for both undergrad and medical school, and did my clinical years here in Grand Rapids. I loved the program and the area so much, that I couldn’t imagine leaving, so here I am!

In my time off, I tend to stay busy and active. I love to rollerblade, golf, bike, spend time with my niece and nephew, or swim in Lake Michigan. I’m a bit of an adrenaline nut as well, so vacations will frequently take me white water rafting, camping, scuba diving, or traveling to a new country around the world. Fortunately, I have found a program that allows me to balance all the loves of my life!

Meghan Collins, D.O.
Medical School: Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences

My name is Meghan, and I consider Torrington, Wyoming my hometown. I attended the University of Wyoming for undergrad, and the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences-College of Osteopathic Medicine for medical school. After completing my transitional internship at Metropolitan Hospital here in Grand Rapids, I joined the GRMERC/MSU Pediatrics Residency at the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital and am glad to finally be focusing my training strictly on Pediatrics!

When I have the time, I enjoy music, camping and spending time with my friends and family.

Ryan Cox, M.D.
Medical School: Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine

I was born and raised in Marshall, Michigan, located in the southern, central region. I went to Hope College in Holland, Michigan for my undergraduate studies, and then to Loyola University – Chicago, Stritch School of Medicine for my medical degree. After doing a rotation in Grand Rapids, I knew this was where I wanted to be for residency.

Whenever I have the time, my wife Amber and I enjoy being outside, mountain biking, running, and downhill skiing. I also love laying down beats on my electric drum set.

Stacy Frye, M.D.
Medical School: Michigan State University - CHM

My name is Stacy and I grew up on the east side of the state in West Bloomfield, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. I attended Michigan State University for both college and medical school, and I completed my clinical rotations here in Grand Rapids during my third and fourth years. My husband, Stanley, and I enjoyed living here so much that we decided to stay for residency. The friendly residents, nice facilities, helpful attendings, and approachable administration made this a program that I didn’t want to pass up. We participated in the Couple’s Match, and he is an Ob-Gyn intern this year.

We have been married two years and recently started our family – by buying two Beagle/Boston Terrier mix puppies. Needless to say, we are keeping busy but we’re having a great time. We are very happy to be staying in West Michigan – we try to head out to Lake Michigan, walk around downtown, and explore the lakeshore towns every chance we get. I’ve also enjoyed running the local trails, going wine-tasting up north in Traverse City, and playing in a softball league with other residents.

Todd Johnson, M.D.
Medical School: Texas A&M University

I consider Plano, Texas home, went to Brigham Young University for undergrad., and Texas A&M for medical school. I actually graduated a year ago, then went to the Moran Eye Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, to complete an Ophthalmic Pathology and Research Fellowship. I am now in Grand Rapids for my Pediatrics training.

I am married and have three children, so when I am not working I love to spend quality time with them, especially our family vacations to Disney World. I enjoy golfing, running scuba diving and playing the piano, as well as mission work. In fact, I have already spent two years on the mission field in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Ajay Khilanani, M.D.
Medical School: Medical School of the Americas

Hello – Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, on the east side of the state, is where I call home. I attended the University of Michigan for undergrad., and the Medical University of the Americas in Nevis, West Indies, for my medical degree. I couldn’t be happier joining a program that I am truly excited about.

I love to run, play soccer and tennis, scuba, sing, and take the time to read a good book. Plus, I have just started learning to play the piano – and all of these things are even more enjoyable when I get to do them with my girlfriend! :)

Charlotte Lofgren, M.D.
Medical School: Southern Illinois University

I was born and raised in Peoria, Illinois, and attended Bradley University there. Southern Illinois University is where I then went for my medical school education. My husband and I are very pleased to now be in Grand Rapids for this next step in my education, to prepare to be the best pediatrician I can be. After residency, and maybe even during residency, I am hoping to do mission work.

I love jazz music, as well as spending time motorcycling, portrait photography and baking – in fact I’ve already surprised the residency office with a plate full of home-made cookies!

Lauren Nicholls, M.D.
Medical School: American University of the Caribbean

Ann Arbor is my hometown, so of course I attended the University of Michigan for my undergraduate studies. I then attended the American University of the Caribbean for my medical degree. At this time, I am planning to pursue a Hematology/Oncology Fellowship after residency.

When I have the extra time, I enjoy running, biking, swimming, hiking and traveling.

Phillip Paras, M.D.
Medical School: Ross University

I have spent most of my life in Chicago and the Chicagoland area. I went to Wheaton College for undergrad, then worked for a while, got married and had 2 children before entering medical school. Moving to the Caribbean island of Dominica to attend Ross University for medical school with my wife and kids (then aged 3 and 2 years) was certainly an adventure and a great experience.

We have since added a third child, and most of my spare time is spent with them, and hanging out with other friends and family. In addition, I love to read mystery novels and am always excited to discover a new author or series. I also enjoy playing tennis and hiking.

I am very happy to be in Grand Rapids for residency. I think the program is big enough to get great training, and being in West Michigan is a great place to live and raise a family.

Richard Song, M.D.
Medical School: Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine

I consider both Staten Island, New York and Chicago, Illinois my hometowns! I attended the University of Chicago for undergrad, then Loyola University – Chicago, Stritch School of Medicine for my medical degree.

Outside of residency, I enjoy running, watching sports, Fantasy Football, and traveling. I am also a huge Yankees fan! :)

Aimee Tow, D.O.
Medical School: Michigan State University - COM

Sterling Heights, Michigan, on the east side of the state, is where I call home. I attended Western Michigan University for undergrad., then Michigan State University's College of Osteopathic Medicine for my medical training. I completed my transitional year internship at St. Joseph's Hospital in Detroit before coming to the "Michigan West Coast" for my Pediatrics training.

When time allows, my husband and I, along with our two dogs, enjoy traveling, running, or just spending time in the great outdoors.

I hail from Virginia Beach, Virginia. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and my medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. After graduating, I married my wonderful husband, Will, and moved to Michigan. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my husband, exercising, playing softball and anything arts and crafts (particularly scrapbooking). If you have questions, feel free to e-mail me at chelseawc@gmail.com.

Michael From, M.D.
Medical School: Indiana University
I consider my home town as Didsbury, Alberta, Canada, but also lived in Nigeria during my middle school years.  After high school, I went to Bethel College in Indiana, and stayed to attend the Indiana University School of Medicine.  When I am not in the hospital, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, playing the piano, golfing, photography and travel.  In fact, I had the opportunity to again visit Africa before starting residency.

Heather Helton, M.D.
Medical School: University of Utah
I was born and raised in Bountiful, Utah. I attended undergraduate at Brigham Young University, then entered medical school at the University of Utah. I’m looking forward to learning more here at DeVos Children’s Hospital in an effort to help educate, comfort and unite families as they gather together to help a child fight whatever illness is plaguing him/her.

When I am not in the hospital, I like spending time with my family – especially my 9 nieces and nephews. I also enjoy traveling, playing tennis, hiking, snowmobiling, and cooking.

Florentina Litra, M.D.
Medical School: Universitatea de Medicina Si Farmacie Carol Davila, Romania
I was born and raised in Romania. That’s where I graduated from medical school, began training in Pediatrics, and became a wife and mother. In 2000, I won a lottery for green-cards and my family and I immigrated to the USA, ready to live the American dream. I had the opportunity to work for the Stem Cell Transplant Program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, while I was preparing for my ECFMG certification. DeVos Children’s was one of the programs that impressed me the most during the interview process and I was very happy to match here.

Grand Rapids is a great place to live! My husband Cristian is looking forward to continue his career in Financial Services. Our daughter, Ioana (who will be a 4th grader in the fall) enjoys the YMCA horseback riding camp and the wonderful weekend on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Priya Monrad, M.D.
Medical School: University of Colorado
I was born and raised in Illinois, but left to attend medical school at the University of Colorado. I love to travel and had the opportunity to visit over a dozen different countries before entering medical school. I also love classical civilization and mythology, and have in the past taught Hindu mythology classes to Indian children in my community. I have enjoyed painting since I was a young child and therefore have had the opportunity to visit many famous art museums in my travels.

James VanBeynen, M.D.
Medical School: Michigan State University - CHM
I was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, obtaining my undergraduate degree at Northern Michigan University, where I majored in biochemistry. I then went to Michigan State University, where I graduated with my medical degree.

My wife Brooke is a resident at Metropolitan Hospital, here in Grand Rapids, so we enjoy our time together when we aren’t on call. In addition, I like hockey, fishing, cross country skiing, biking and hiking.

Natalie vanVenrooij, M.D.
Medical School: Radboud University Nijmegen, Netherlands
I was born and raised in the Netherlands. I received my Bachelors Degree in Physiotherapy from Hogeschool Arnhem Nijmegen. I then went on to Medical School at Radboud University Nijmen, Netherlands. I met and married an American lawyer, which is what brought me to the United States. I now look forward to working in an environment that allows me to combine my interest in direct patient care with research and teaching.

Danielle Wallace, M.D.
Medical School: University of Colorado
While I was born in Fairbanks, Alaska, I’ve been a little of everywhere. I went to Undergrad at Pensacola Christian College in Florida, and Medical School at the University of Colorado. I have a wonderful husband, and we have a new baby boy – Aiden. I’m now learning how to juggle a husband, baby and residency. When I have spare time, I enjoy scuba diving, skiing, camping, hiking and baking.

Markeeta West, M.D.
Medical School: Michigan State University - CHM
My name is Markeeta, and I consider my hometown as Romulus, Michigan. I attend Michigan State University for both undergrad and medical school. I stayed on the east side of the state, joining a Family Medicine Residency; however, halfway through the first year I realized my real joy was in Pediatrics, so transferred to DeVos Children’s Hospital.

When I’m not in the hospital, I enjoy shopping, traveling, dancing and going to different cultural events – which I’m told are abundant in Grand Rapids.

Rhonda Yono, M.D.
Medical School: American University of the Caribbean
I grew up in Waterford, Michigan, which is on the east side of the state. I attended the University of Michigan for my undergraduate studies, and the American University of the Caribbean for medical school. I love the summer sun and heat, especially reading a good book while sitting at the beach or a pool. I enjoy spending as much time as I can with my 6 nieces and 5 nephews. We all look forward to our slumber parties at grandma and grandpa’s!

I am truly enjoying newlywed life and residency at the same time! I am thankful to have a great husband and to be a part of an awesome residency program in this new time of my life.

Bea Zepeda, M.D.
Medical School: East Carolina University
I came to Michigan from North Carolina. After spending many years as a Pediatric/Neonatal Respiratory Therapist, I felt like I was missing something when it came to caring for children. Since I started training to be a physician – both in medical school rotations and my first few months here - I found that missing link.

When I am not working, I enjoy sailing, boating and swimming. While I don’t have the ocean, Lake Michigan is close and easy to get to during time off.

Susan Balmer, M.D.

Growing up in Marquette, located in the upper peninsula of Michigan, I was very active in music. In fact, my other career aspiration for when I’m not on call is I love playing my violin and viola.

My undergraduate degree came from St. Olaf College in Minnesota, where I majored in music and chemistry. I then attended Michigan State University, where I graduated with my medical degree.

While I was born in Taiwan, I am actually a U.S. Citizen, having lived the majority of my life in Illinois. I attended Illinois State University for my undergraduate, majoring in Biology and Chemistry. My medical degree came from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. I’ve also already participated in many research projects/publications. When I have some spare time, I enjoy basketball, swimming, movies and stamp-collecting.

Jennifer Gerardin, M.D.

I was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison for my undergraduate degree in Biochemistry and the Medical College of Wisconsin for my Medical Degree. Now I’m receiving my residency training on the other side of the ‘big lake’.

When I’m not on call, I enjoy photography/art, cooking and spending time with my twin sister.

Eric Kirk, MD

I was born and raised in Indiana, attending Indiana University for both undergrad and medical school. After graduation, I joined the GRMERC Transitional Year Program, where I had the chance to gain more exposure to the different specialties, and determined that Internal Medicine/Pediatrics was where I wanted to be – also leaving me the opportunity to stay in Grand Rapids.

I have an interest in volunteering and construction, which led me to numerous Habitat for Humanity projects. In addition, I enjoy exercising, reading (primarily history and biographies), hiking, and fishing. I also have an interest in traveling, with my greatest trip thus far being to Kenya for a medical mission, affording me the exposure to International Medicine. Having my eyes opened to medicine in the “developing world”, it’s exciting to know that I can apply for an international rotation during my residency here.

Anna Weiss, MD
Medical School: East Carolina University School of Medicine

I was born and raised in North Carolina, attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for undergrad., then the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. I enjoy everything outdoors.

Prior to coming to Grand Rapids, I worked as a Professional Ballroom Dance Instructor! :) I now live downtown with the love of my life … my furry, four-legged child, Isabella. Isabella and I are working towards “our” certification for pet therapy so she can help make people feel better, too! :) We miss our warm, saltwater beaches back home, but are very excited about our first “real” winter. :)
