Medical Student Summer Research Internship Program 2009
The GRMERC Medical Student Summer Research Internship Program is designed to provide Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) students (between their first and second year) the opportunity to work closely with a research mentor on a project while attending educational research conferences/classes. The goal of this program is to introduce medical students to the basic concepts of the design, implementation, interpretation and presentation of clinical and/or basic science research. At the end of the internship, students will give an oral presentation about their experience.
This program is competitive, based on grades, recommendations, previous experience, and a personal meeting/phone interview. Students are expected to work full-time for the duration of the internship, so participation in this program is not compatible with working at another job.
Program Timeline: The internships will be a six to nine week research experience based on the time availability of the applicant.
Selection Process: Completed applications are reviewed by a committee comprised of local researchers. Selected applicants will be contacted prior to March 31, 2009. If other summer opportunities become available after April 7, 2009, additional applications may be reconsidered.
Placement: Each applicant's internship will be based on their research interests selected on the application form. Each experience will be different based on the research question, mentor and status of the project. Possible work environments include a basic science laboratory at the Van Andel Research Institute, private physician office and/or hospital setting.
Salary: The Summer Student Internship Program will be limited to a 40 hour work week with pay at $12.00/hr.
Housing: Local area colleges/universities may have student housing available. It will be the responsibility of the student to make travel and housing arrangements and to pay for his or her own room and board.
UGME students must be currently enrolled, in good standing and in their first year of medical school.
All application materials are due by Friday, February 27, 2009.
To be considered for an internship position, students must submit all of the following components. Incomplete application packets will not be considered.
