Colon and Rectal Surgery - Faculty

Rebecca Hoedema, MD Program Director
Rebecca Hoedema is the current program director for the Ferguson Clinic colon and rectal surgery fellowship program.  She graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine and subsequently came to Grand Rapids, Michigan for her general surgery training at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital.  After completing the general surgery residency, she then completed a colon and rectal surgery fellowship at the Ferguson Clinic.  After graduation, she then joined the staff of the Ferguson Clinic becoming the first female staff surgeon with the group.  She has been active with the colorectal surgery training program and became associate program director in 2008 and subsequently program director in 2010.  She is board certified in both general surgery and colon and rectal surgery.  Her interests include laparoscopic colon surgery including SILS, robotic surgery and pelvic floor diseases and treatment.  She met her husband in Grand Rapids and they have one son.

Theodor Asgeirsson, MD
Dr. Theodor Asgeirsson has been with the Spectrum Health Medical Group since 2010.  He graduated from the University of Iceland Medical School and did his general surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts.  Dr Asgeirsson completed his fellowship with the GRMEP Colon and Rectal Surgery Program at the Ferguson Clinic in 2009 and added a year to his training focusing on clinical outcomes research within the field of colorectal surgery.  Dr Asgeirsson currently serves as the Assistant Director of outcomes research within the Department of Colorectal Surgery. Dr. Asgeirsson is married with 3 children.

Nadav Dujovny, MD
Nadav Dujovny joined the Ferguson Clinic in 2005 after completing his Colorectal Surgery fellowship at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, The University Hospitals of Cornell and Columbia.  Prior to his fellowship, Dr. Dujovny trained at Rush University/Cook County Hospital in Chicago for his General Surgery residency.  He graduated from medical school in 1998 from the University of Illinois in Chicago.  Dr. Dujovny grew up in the Detroit area and went to the University of Michigan for college where he majored in  history.  Currently, he is an active surgeon within the Department of Colorectal Surgery of the Spectrum Health Medical Group.  He also staffs the Hereditary Colon Cancer clinic for Spectrum Health.  His interests include laparoscopic colon surgery, TEMS/TAMIS, SILS and colorectal cancer genetics.  He is married with four children.

Ryan Figg, MD
Dr. Figg graduated from Wayne State University of Medicine and then moved back to Grand Rapids, Michigan where he was raised to start a general surgery residency program through GRMEP.  He then went to Cleveland Clinic in Ohio to complete his colorectal surgery fellowship in 2006.  After completing his fellowship, he moved back to Grand Rapids, Michigan to practice with his father who is a general surgeon and then became part of the Ferguson Clinic in 2010.  He has a very busy practice and also involved in the fellowship program.  He is married and has two children.

Donald Kim, MD Research Director
Dr. Kim joined the Ferguson Clinic in 1999.  After completing medical school at Loyola University, he stayed in Chicago to complete a general surgery residency at Loyola University.  He subsequently completed a colorectal surgery fellowship at the University of Minnesota before joining the faculty in 1999.  He is actively involved in the fellowship program and research.  He was the first to start robotic assisted colon surgery at the Ferguson Clinic and his other interests include TEMS/TAMIS, STARR, SILS, and InterStim for fecal incontinence.  He is an avid runner and has completed many local and national marathons.  He is married with three grown children.

Martin Luchtefeld, MD
Dr. Luchtefeld served as Program Director for the colorectal surgery fellowship from 1993 until 2010.  After graduating from Southern Illinois University, he completed his general surgery residency at Southern Illinois University and then moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan for his colorectal surgery fellowship at the Ferguson Clinic.  He is still very active with the fellowship program and now co-heads the research department.  His interests are very broad and include laparoscopic colon surgery, inflammatory bowel disease, TEMS and anorectal surgery.  He is very involved in the ASCRS and the Board for Colon and Rectal Surgery.  He is married and has three grown children.

Heather Slay, MD
Dr. Heather Slay joined the faculty in 2006.  She graduated from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA, and completed her general surgery residency at Emory as well.  She spent one year on faculty at Emory before coming to Grand Rapids where she completed her fellowship with the GRMEP Colon and Rectal Surgery Program at the Ferguson Clinic. She is married with three children.

Ellen Deuparo, PA
Ellen was born and raised on the east side of Michigan and went to Michigan State University for her undergraduate studies and graduated in 2009.  She then went to graduate school at the Rosalind Franklin University in North Chicago, IL and graduated in the spring of 2011.  She is now working for the Ferguson Clinic and works closely with the colorectal surgery staff, fellows and residents.  She is a very helpful addition to the team, helps coordinate patient care and works very closely with the colorectal surgery fellows.
