Program Leadership

Program Director:
Marc Schlatter, MD, FACS, FAAP
Dr. Schlatter is a clinically active pediatric surgeon, certified in General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery by the American Board of Surgery. A graduate of the Ohio State University College of Medicine, he completed his general surgery residency in Grand Rapids at the Butterworth/Michigan State University affiliated program, and fellowships in pediatric liver transplantation at the University of Texas, Southwestern in Dallas and pediatric surgery at Indiana University in Indianapolis. He has been involved in resident education in Grand Rapids since 1992, and has received several teaching awards. He is a peer reviewer for the Journal of Pediatric Surgery and an active member of the Children's Oncology Group.

Stanley Sherman MD, FACSDr. Sherman is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Michigan State University.  He is a graduate of Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.  Dr. Sherman completed his residency at Blodgett/St. Mary’s General Surgery Residency, and completed a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh.  Dr. Sherman’s interests include transplantation and surgical critical care.  He is a recipient of the “Teacher of the Year” in 2006-2007 resident teaching award.

David Figg MD, FACS Dr. Figg is a graduate of the University of Michigan. He completed his internship and residency training at the Butterworth/Michigan State University General Surgery Residency. Dr. Figg's interests include general surgery, endocrine, third world surgery as well as resident education. He is a two-time recipient of the "Teacher of the Year" Award from the surgical residents.

Paul Kemmeter, MD Dr. Kemmeter is a graduate of Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. At the Grand Rapids Medical Education Partners/Michigan State University Dr. Kemmeter completed his general surgery internship and residency and also completed the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship. Dr. Kemmeter's interests include general surgery, bariatric surgery and surgical education. He is a recipient of the 2004-2005 resident teaching award.

Mathew H. Chung, MD, FACS Dr. Chung is a graduate of George Washington University in Washington, DC. His internship and residency was completed at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, WA. Dr. Chung completed a Surgical Oncology Fellowship at John Wayne Cancer Institute. Dr. Chung was the Residency Program Director for General Surgery at Tripler Army Medical Center. Dr. Chung's interests include general surgery and surgical oncology. He was a former program director of the general surgery residency program at Tripler Army Medical Center. He is a recipient of the "Teacher of the Year" in 2005-2006 resident teaching award.

Richard Wilcox, MD, FACS Dr. Wilcox is a graduate of the University of Michigan.  He completed his internship and residency at the Blodgett Memorial Medical Center.  Dr. Wilcox’s interests include burn and general surgery.  Dr. Wilcox is the Director of the Burn Unit at Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital.
